Film Review : The Hunger Games : Mockingjay – Part 1.

Was it really necessary to split the final book into two films? After seeing Part 1 last night, I would have to say no. I read the series when they first came out, and so I know what is to come in Part 2.

The last book, while not as good as the first couple, is definitely more exciting than what they put on screen this month. Build-up to a fight is great, but when the whole film is centred on them gearing up, it can become boring, fast. Not that it needs to be full of action every second, but they could have cut out a lot of the scenes from this new film, and in doing so make the third film, Mockingjay, – full stop. Sure, it would have probably made the film a bit longer, but that didn’t stop Scorsese when releasing The Wolf of Wall Street and that seemed to do ok.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a good film. The acting is on point from actors such as Julianne Moore and the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Jennifer Lawrence is as fantastic as ever (The Hanging Tree scene a definite standout). I didn’t even find Peeta and Gale as irritating as usual (the love triangle has never been as interesting an aspect of the series for me).

When the team goes out to record their propaganda there is a feeling of excitement for the war to come. You’re all revved up for the fight and then they leave it there. Making you wait another year to finally see what will happen to our heroine.
